Response To Neville Letter About County Rail Restoration
To the Editor.

James Neville's attack on the restoration of the Rahway Valley Railroad. is so wrong it demands countering.- First, the RV was never abandoned but Union County had the state buy the former line to railbank it for freight or passenger or light rail use. The problem was Carol Westervelt of Kenilworth who trespassed on the right of way and then had the unmitigated gall to get her town to appoint her to the County Transportation Advisory Board , to try to get them to allow her to. continue blocking the line for her own personal, gain. She was then joined by know-nothings Munoz and Kean who tried to pass laws stopping the' rail line Is she a friend of Big 0il? And her hangers on, too.
The County needs rail transit for (1) America is down  to one percent of the world oil reserve and contines to waste it as if there were plenty; (2) Rail freight and passenger are so far more environmentally friendly, that roads should be torn up for rail; (3) There ate too many dormant industrial sites that can only be revived by restoring rail and (4) We need a cross-county rail line, which the RV/SI fill nicely.
Neville chastises Senator Raymond Lesniak and County Manager Devanney when all that venom must be aimed at Munoz, Kean, and the rest of the supporters of Big Oil and their continued waste. Within a very short time oil will be rationed and those areas with active rail will be the economic powerhouses of the day.
Neville is from Springfield, which sold off all its farms for ratables and now is the prime source of all the congestion we must have rail to cut. As for Route 22 the DOT study found the only: way to end the extreme congestion short of tearing out all those ratable producing -business in the center isle was to put in at least three traffic lights to create breaks. One of the lights would be at the RV crossing which is adjacent to Michigan Avenue. Too bad Neville doesn't see beyond the end of his nose. Of course; we all remember how Springfield wanted to build a fence to keep "them" from swarming out of Union to rob, rape and pillage.
"Nuff said!"
